Welcome

Welcome to the second edition of the Workshop on Mobile Opportunistic Networking, MobiOpp 2010. The workshop is sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE, and technically co-sponsored by the IFIP TC6 Working Group 6.3 "Performance of Communication Systems".

The first workshop in this series, originally settled with this name (the First International Workshop on Mobile Opportunistic Networking, MobiOpp 2007), was held on June 11th, 2007 in San Juan, Puerto Rico (USA) in conjunction with ACM MobiSys 2007. The success of MobiOpp 2007, and the growing interest of the scientific community in the area of opportunistic networking, motivated the organization of MobiOpp 2010 as a stand-alone two-day event.

MobiOpp 2010, organized by the Institute of Informatics and Telematics (IIT) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), takes place on February 22 and 23, 2010, in Pisa (Italy) in the wonderful tourist area of Tuscany. Pisa offers a cultural and historical atmosphere that is the most appropriate for an enjoyable and professionally fruitful meeting.

The response to the Call for Papers shows that MobiOpp 2010 has been particularly well received by researchers working in the field of Opportunistic Networks. Specifically, we received sixty-three submissions, addressing topics related to all fields of opportunistic networks. Each paper was reviewed by (at least) three reviewers, and after an in-depth (on-line) discussion phase, the Program Committee selected nine full papers and nine concise papers for oral presentation in the workshop sessions. In addition, nine papers have been selected for poster presentation.

In response to separate Call for Demos and Call for PhD Forum we received several interesting proposals that enriched the MobiOpp 2010 technical program. Specifically, the Demo co-chairs selected six proposals to be demonstrated during the workshop, and the PhD Forum co-chairs have identified ten PhD-candidate presentations.

These figures, and the quality of the received contributions, show that MobiOpp is already seen as a premiere forum for presenting and discussing ideas and results in all fields of Opportunistic Networking.

Two keynote speeches by leading researchers in the field, Andrew Campbell (Dartmouth College, USA) and Jon Crowcroft (University of Cambridge, UK), and a thought-provoking panel complete the MobiOpp 2010 program.

This event would not have been possible without the enthusiastic and invaluable work of a number of colleagues. First of all, we would like to thank the Program Committee members for their precious effort in creating a high-quality program. We wish to thank the members of the MobiOpp Steering Committee, for assisting us in shaping the scope of the workshop, and making important decisions for the workshop success. A special thank to Silvia Giordano (SUPSI, Switzerland) and Mohan J. Kumar (The University of Texas at Arlington) for organizing a very interesting session for the presentation and discussion of PhD-candidate research activities. We wish also to thank Laura Galluccio (University of Catania, Italy) and Franck Legendre (ETH Zurich, Switzerland) for developing a great demonstration program. Mooi Choo Chuah (Lehigh University, USA) and Adriana Lazzaroni (IIT-CNR, Italy) have also made a valuable contribution by handling registrations. Chiara Boldrini (IIT-CNR, Italy) has timely managed the publication of the workshop proceedings. Emilio Ancillotti and Bu-Sung Lee also highly contributed to MobiOpp 2010 success by widely advertising the workshop. Lastly, many thanks go to the members of the local organizing committee, Antonio Pinizzotto, Patrizia Andronico, Maria Bucci and Raffaella Casarosa (IIT-CNR, Italy) for handling all local organization issues.

The support of our sponsors, the Institute of Informatics and Telematics (IIT) and Elsevier -- Computer Communications journal and Pervasive and Mobile Computing journal -- is highly appreciated. We also wish to acknowledge the support of the EU projects Socialnets and Newcom++.

Finally, we would like to thank all the authors that submitted their papers to MobiOpp 2010; it is indeed their work that makes this event possible. Last, but not least, we wish to thank all the participants for attending the conference.

We sincerely hope that you will enjoy MobiOpp 2010 in the city of the leaning tower!
